What’s happening with our water supply?

A simple question?

eThekwini is in the midst of a water supply crisis. If you don’t live here, you may have seen the media coverage. Living in Verulam, I’m experiencing this first hand.

I really wanted to have something:

  • that tells me whether I have water at home or not.
  • that notifies me when pressure is dropping or coming back.
  • that lets me see what’s happening in other areas.

So I built it..

Introducing Cascada

Cascada is a water monitoring platform. It’s pretty easy to set it up:

First, you get a Cascada Sensor installed into your water supply.

And then you’ll see your Sensor in the app:

The Cascada App tells you in real time what is happening with your water supply. It also sends you notifications:

Lets you see previous data:

Alhambra Drive, Verulam (05/10/24 – 00:05 to 23:59)

And you can see the water status by looking at sensors in other areas:

On the map, you can see three sensors currently installed in Verulam. As more users sign up throughout eThekwini, more sensors will appear on the map.

Thus far, I’ve shown you screenshots from my iPhone. Here’s the Android app, installed from the Play Store:

So how much does it cost?

For now, each Cascada installation is custom quoted but here’s a residential example:

A sensor installed in a compact residential complex comprising 20 units with app access for 50 users will cost R1000pm or R20 per user per month.

That’s just over the price of this 500ml Bonaqua spring water from KFC:

Don’t forget:

Kavi, I need a Cascada Sensor and App access now!

My Thoughts

Cascada is my baby. There are no middlemen, just me. I wrote (and continuously update) the iOS and Android apps, build the sensors, tend to the Cascada Cloud and read and reply to every email sent to hello@cascada.co.za. I’ll also be there when the sensor is installed into your plumbing. Cascada (and previous variants) have helped me and my test users for almost a year (time flies!) and it’s now time to open it up for public access.

The Future

Well, the future is actually in your hands (yes, you!). You can help others learn about Cascada by clicking on the link below and sharing it with your friends, family and groups:
